Stay Cool this Summer with Boston Lager and Summer Ale Infused “Brewsicles”

Summer Ale BarThere’s no better way to enjoy summers on the beach than with a cooler stocked with the staples – Boston Lager, Summer Ale and Porch Rocker. But this summer, we have a new recipe that will surprise y our friends at a backyard BBQ.  It’s surprised ours! Enter Summer Ale and Boston Lager-infused “brewscicles.”

With the help of dynamic sibling duo Daniel and Rebecca Dengrove of Brewla Bars, who we first met at our Brewing the American Dream Pitch Room Contest (they won, BTW!), we capture all the great flavors of Summer Ale and Boston Lager and infused them into three easy popsicle recipes.  Simple and easy so you can make them at home.

Samuel Adams Summer “Ale-Fresca” Brewsicle

The Summer “Ale-Fresca” pop boasts two full bottles of Summer Ale, lemon, and grapefruit. The citrus notes of a refreshing Summer Ale translate well in this recipe.

Ingredients:

  • Juice from 6 small to medium sized lemons (make sure they smell aromatic), about 2/3 cup
  • Juice from 2 pink grapefruits, about 1/2 cup
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 2 Bottles or Cans of Samuel Adams Summer Ale
  • 2 tsp lemon zest
  • 2 tsp grapefruit zest

Method: Juice the lemons and grapefruit.  Combine the juice with sugar and stir until completely dissolved.  Add the Summer Ale slowly to prevent too much foam from forming.  Add the zests.  Taste the mix and adjust the sweetness by adding 2-3 tablespoons more sugar if needed.  Fill molds, freeze overnight and enjoy!

Don’t have popsicle molds? Try this easy DIY hack: Use a paper cup, fill with the popsicle recipe, cover with aluminum foil and poke popsicle sticks into the center of each one.  The aluminum foil will prevent the stick from falling sideways.

Sweet & Spicy Summer Alescicle

This pop starts with zesty notes of lemon and grapefruit, but give it some sugar and you’ll find a secret, spicy side. Combining the peppery heat from Summer Ale’s Grains of Paradise and fruitiness from pink peppercorns, this pop packs a peppery bite wrapped in a sweet fruity flavor.

  • 1/2 tsp Pink peppercorn sugar blend*

Method:

Create your pink peppercorn blend by crushing 2 teaspoon of pink peppercorns with 2 tablespoons of sugar.  Make sure the peppercorns are completely crushed.  You can do this using a mortar and pestle or by placing the mix into a coffee bean/spice grinder.

Juice the lemons and grapefruit.  Combine the juice with sugar and stir until completely dissolved.  Add Summer Ale slowly to prevent too much foam from forming.  Add the peppercorns.  Taste the mix and adjust the sweetness by adding 2-3 tablespoons more sugar if needed.  Fill molds, freeze overnight and enjoy!

Lager and Spice and Everything Nice Brewsicle

Smooth, balanced but complex. The special blend of sweet spices provide an upfront sweetness similar to the malts in Boston Lager, while the vanilla ice cream and milk provide the same smooth finish you expect from drinking a lager.

Ingredients:

  • 1 scoop vanilla ice cream
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • ½ cup Samuel Adams Boston Lager
  • ¼ tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp spice blend (clove, cinnamon and sugar)*
  • 1 tbsp sugar

Method:

Start by creating your spice blend.  We used ¼ teaspoon of clove, ½ teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon of sugar.  We blended the three ingredients together and set aside.

In a blender, combine ice cream, milk, Boston Lager, vanilla, spice blend, and sugar.  Blend on a medium speed to make sure everything is well mixed together.  Taste the mixture and adjust if necessary.  For a sweeter ice pop add another 1 – 2 tablespoons sugar and stir well until completely dissolved.  Fill molds, freeze overnight and enjoy!
